Stacy Alaimo, "Bodily Natures:Science, Environment, and the Material Sel...

The linguistic turn that dominated humanist academia in the latter half of the twentieth century is now waning, as scholars seek to move beyond its perceived limitations. The conviction that language alone shapes our world is being methodically challenged, and while not entirely dismissed, it is now viewed with suspicion for its inadequacies. The current academic discourse emphasizes the material dimensions of the world, moving away from traditional realist epistemologies, Marxist materialisms, or biological determinism. Instead, there is a focus on rethinking matter itself as possessing agency, intention, and purpose.

This shift is particularly evident in feminist theory, science studies, environmental humanities, and animal studies, where the agency and significance of material forces and their interactions with human and nonhuman entities are at the forefront of inquiry. This emerging material turn is driving significant theoretical transformations, leading to new conceptualizations of matter in a posthuman age. This era is characterized by the diminishing distinctions between the human and the more-than-human world, with a renewed focus on the material interchanges between bodies and environments. While the cultural and communicative aspects of the body are still acknowledged, the primary focus is no longer on viewing the body solely as a socio-culturally constructed object. Instead, the material environment and its implications are gaining prominence in contemporary theory.

The material turn is thus effectively challenging and reshaping contemporary intellectual trends without reverting to anthropocentrism or Cartesian dualism. Leading this charge are female theorists like Karen Barad and Stacy Alaimo. Barad is celebrated as a key figure in the material turn, while Alaimo is recognized for her work on trans-corporeality. Alaimo’s book, "Bodily Natures," is an interdisciplinary study that offers a new critical model to understand the complex interactions between human bodies, nonhuman entities, ecological systems, chemical agents, and other actors.

Alaimo defines trans-corporeality as the movement across bodies, interconnections between various bodily natures, and the material linkages between human corporeality and the more-than-human world. Her argument highlights the necessity of more comprehensive scientific, sociological, and textual knowledge practices to account for the often-invisible material forces that flow between people, places, and economic/political systems. Trans-corporeality is thus proposed as a new theoretical direction, aiming to account for how nature, the environment, and the material world impact human bodies, knowledge, and practices.

Alaimo contends that trans-corporeality reorients the body within the material world, countering late twentieth-century constructivist theories that cultivated disembodied and transcendent subjects. While acknowledging the valuable insights these theories have provided into race, gender, class, and sexuality, she argues that they have often neglected the significance of matter itself. In contrast, trans-corporeality “naturalizes” the body by situating it within a world of biological creatures, ecosystems, and human-made substances. This perspective seeks to integrate the body more fully into its material environment, emphasizing the dynamic interactions and interdependencies that shape our existence.

Among the theorists she engages with are Karen Barad, Ulrich Beck, Bruno Latour, Val Plumwood, Elizabeth Wilson, Nancy Tuana, Teresa de Lauretis, Donna Haraway, David Abram, Elizabeth Grosz, Ladelle McWhorter, Vicky Kirby, Katherine Hayles, Timothy W. Luke, and Andrew Pickering. She also references environmental activists such as Susan G. Koben, Robert N. Proctor, Sandra Steingraber, Breast Cancer Action, and Greenpeace, alongside literary authors like Meridel Le Sueur, Muriel Rukeyser, Ana Castillo, and Simon Ortiz.

Alaimo argues that the material interconnections between the human and the more-than-human world are best understood through the theoretical framework of trans-corporeality, where “corporeal theories, environmental theories, and science studies meet and mingle in productive ways”. She introduces the concept of "material memoirs" by authors such as Audre Lorde, Candida Lawrence, Zillah Eisenstein, Susanne Antonetta, and Sandra Steingraber to exemplify how the material self is entangled within economic, political, cultural, scientific, and substantial networks.

Alaimo’s central theme is the need to move beyond the binary divide between material and discursive analyses of the body toward recognizing the complex "intra-action" between the two. This concept, derived from Barad, refers to the mutual constitution of all objects and agencies within an undivided field of existence. Alaimo employs Barad's notion to bridge the gap between discursive and material practices, proposing an environmental ethics that focuses on the interfaces, interchanges, and transformative material/discursive practices. Her originality lies in theorizing the body—both human and nonhuman—as a trans-corporeal agency that interacts with social, ecological, political, cultural, and material forces, which are often hazardously interconnected.

She uses the example of toxic bodies to illustrate trans-corporeal space, highlighting how harmful substances in water, air, and soil impact the body in profound ways. These toxic bodies exemplify the need for an environmental ethics that addresses the interconnectedness of human corporeality and the more-than-human world, resisting ideological forces of disconnection. Alaimo asserts that "toxic bodies may provoke material, trans-corporeal ethics that turn from the disembodied values and ideals of bounded individuals toward an attention to situated, evolving practices". This shift in focus brings the context for ethics to encompass not only social but also material dimensions, involving the interactions of biological, climatic, economic, and political forces.

Alaimo argues that a trans-corporeal understanding of the world enhances our grasp of environmental justice, health, hazards, and risks, which is the central tenet of Bodily Natures. She states, "Bodily Natures grapples with the ways in which environmental ethics, social theories, popular understandings of science, and conceptions of the human self are profoundly altered by the recognition that 'the environment' is not located somewhere out there, but is always the very substance of ourselves".

The book is divided into six chapters, with the first part addressing environmental justice models and the second part probing environmental health issues. Throughout, Alaimo raises questions about the material dimensions of self, race, class, and gender, as well as toxic environments, biomedical truths, scientific mediation of knowledge, and epidemiological studies. She offers new models of environmental justice and personal knowledge practices to counteract the effects of environmental illness. By linking biology and politics, she constructs powerful instances of trans-corporeality in a risk society where people are confronted daily with toxic substances. For instance, the concept of the “proletarian lung” from Richard Charles Lewontin and Richard Levins symbolizes the corporeal manifestations of class. This concept serves as the starting point for chapter two, which examines works by Meridel Le Sueur and Muriel Rukeyser that emphasize the palpable interrelations between bodies and natures.

Chapter three, “Invisible Matters: The Sciences of Environmental Justice,” connects environmental justice science, literature, and activism with toxic environments and raced bodies. Here, Alaimo analyzes novels by Percival Everett and Ana Castillo, and Simon Ortiz’s poems, alongside various activists, to explore environmental justice struggles. Chapters four and five delve into environmental health issues, particularly focusing on the material memoirs of women writers and the concept of multiple chemical sensitivity as a form of trans-corporeal space.

Chapter four is particularly compelling as it showcases how ordinary individuals undertake epidemiological projects to confront environmental dangers, illustrating how the self is co-extensive with the environment and its vast biological, economic, and industrial systems. Chapter five continues this exploration by discussing multiple chemical sensitivity and its implications for posthuman environmental ethics. The concluding chapter examines the assumptions of genetic engineering through Greg Bear’s Darwin series, arguing that materiality, rather than humans, has the power to transform.

Glen A Love, "Revaluing Nature: Toward an Ecological Criticism" (Summary)

Arnold Toynbee, an English historian, argued that the present biosphere is the only habitable space and that mankind has the power to make it uninhabitable if the global population does not take prompt and vigorous concerted action to check pollution and toxic pollution caused by short-sighted industrial greed. In the intervening decade, little has been done to address these ecological issues, leading to an uninhabitable earth. The catalogue of actual and potential horrors is familiar to us, including threats of nuclear holocaust, radiation poisoning, germ warfare, the alarming growth of the world's popular population, global warming, destruction of the planet's protected areas, overcutting of the world's last remaining great forests, critical loss of topsoil and groundwater, overfishing and toxic poisoning of oceans, inundation in our own garbage, and an increasing rate of extinction of plant and animal species.

However, instead of confronting these ecological issues, we prefer to think on other things, such as mass culture and literary research. In the face of profound threats to our biological survival, we continue to celebrate the self-aggrandizing ego and place self-interest above public interest, even in matters of common survival. The English profession has failed to significantly address the issue of environmental degradation, which is a critical concern for our survival. The problem-solving strategies of the past have been increasingly ineffective, and we have grown accustomed to living with crises and outliving them.

Contemporary "deep" ecologists argue that we must break through our preoccupation with mediating only human issues and focus on the ecological systems that must absorb its impact. Theodore Roszak states that our economic style is too great, too fast, and reckless for the ecological systems that must absorb its impact. The distinction between literature and these issues of the degradation of the environment is often overlooked, with the exception of certain categories such as "nature writing," "regionalism," or "interdisciplinary studies." Joseph Meeker's book, "The Comedy of Suruiual: Studies in Literary Ecology," offers a new reading of literature from an ecological viewpoint, arguing that literature should be examined carefully and honestly to discover its influence upon human behavior and the natural environment, determine its role in the welfare and survival of mankind, and offer insight into human relationships with other species and the world around us.

The text discusses the disciplinary revaluation of literature and its role in addressing public concerns. It highlights the need for a redefinition of what is significant on earth, as human rights extend to the non-human world. Ecoconsciousness is a particular contribution of regional literature, nature-writing, and other ignored forms that do not seem to respond to anthropocentric assumptions and methodologies.

The pastoral mode, which traditionally posits a green world where sophisticated urbanites retreat to learn from nature, is in need of reassessment due to its anthropocentric assumptions. The green world becomes a highly stylized and simplified creation of humanistic assumptions, distorting the true essence of each. The author suggests that the lasting appeal of pastoral is a testament to our instinctive or mythic sense of our ancestors as creatures of natural origins, who must return periodically to the earth for the rootholds of sanity denied by civilization.

Western American literature provides some appropriate versions of pastoral, such as Joseph Wod Krutch, a latter-day western writer who lived in New York City and wrote extensively on the natural world. Krutch argued that contemporary science had sucked dry modern life of its moral and spiritual values, and went on to become a scientist of a natural world in which he found many of the values he had presumed to be lost. He became a writer of natural history who, under the influence of Thoreau and Aldo Leopold, came to reassess his dualistic view of man's nature.

In conclusion, the text highlights the need for a reevaluation of pastoral in terms of a more complex understanding of nature and the importance of reevaluating the anthropocentric assumptions that underlie it. By doing so, we can better understand and appreciate the complex interplay between nature and human society.

Krutch's understanding of ego-consciousness evolved from ego-consciousness to eco-consciousness, as he realized that mankind's ingenuity had outpaced its wisdom. His investigation of the paradox of Man, who is a pafi of nature yet can become what he is only by being something also unique, led him to expand his vision of what is significant. This realization came to mean more to him than he realized and summed up a kind of pantheism which was gradually coming to be an essential part of the faith.

The tug of eco-consciousness as a corrective to ego-consciousness is a familiar feature of western work, as it is in the great preponderance of those considered "western writers" by birthright or long association. Much of what it means to be a western writer is to reject the contemptuous epithet, nature-lover.

Pastoralism in American literature has been a subject of debate and analysis, with Freud, Fromm, and Shepard arguing that a society can be sick due to the neurosis shared by millions of people. The literature of the American West constitutes a kind of reflective, as demonstrated by Harold P. Simonson's work "Hortology of the West." Recent studies of pastoral ideology reveal its pervasive appeal in American literature, with Leo Marx acknowledging its relevance but underestimating its significance. Lawrence Buell explores the experience of American pastoral in various frames and contexts, including social, political, gender-based, aesthetic, pragmatic, and environmental.

The emerging threat of ecological holocaust may increase the importance of pastoral as a literary and cultural force in the future. An ideology framed in such terms, with human participants taking their own place in and recognizing their obligation to the shared natural world, will be an appropriate pastoral construct for the future. The redefinition of pastoral requires that contact with the green world be acknowledged as something more than a temporary excursion to simplicity, which exists primarily for the sake of its eventual renunciation and return to the "real" world at the end. A pastoral for the present and the future calls for a better science of nature, a greater understanding of its complexity, a more radical awareness of its primal energy and stability, and a more acute questioning of the values of the supposedly sophisticated society to which we are bound.

The Western Literature Association (WLA) is poised to lead a critical shift in the literature profession, focusing on the integration of human with natural cycles of life. This shift could be influenced by ecological perspectives, such as racism and sexism, which are already being addressed in our pedagogy and theory. As the discipline of literary criticism retreats from public life into a professionalism characterized by its obscurity and inaccessibility, it is essential to begin asking fundamental questions about ourselves and the literature we profess.

The growing interest in nature writing is not limited to the American West, as writers and scholars from this region have been at the forefront of recent publications on nature writing. Ecological issues are both regional and global, transcending political boundaries. Deb Lylder has suggested an international meeting of the WLA, with significant participation from scholars in other countries, to examine and explore the literary-ecological connections raised here.

The most important function of literature today is to redirect human consciousness to a full consideration of its place in a threatened natural world. Nature writing, literature of place, regional writing, and regional writing of nature flourish now, even as it is ignored or denigrated by most other criticism.

Val Plumwood's "Feminism and the Mastery of Nature" (Book Note)

In this text, Plumwood expands the scope of feminist inquiry by incorporating discussions on nature, gender, class, and race oppression, thereby inviting a more nuanced understanding of the interconnected systems of domination that shape our world. This collision challenges our conventional understanding of time, as humans find themselves straddling processes that span millions of years alongside those that unfold over mere decades.

 

Language itself reflects this temporal dilemma. Consider our distinction between renewable and nonrenewable energy sources. While we deem fossil fuels nonrenewable within human timescales, geologist Bryan Lovell suggests they are technically renewable on a geological scale, as new oil reserves will form over millions of years.

 

Paleoclimatologists provide critical evidence for anthropogenic global warming, drawing from ancient ice core samples dating back over 800,000 years and records found in fossils and geological materials. Geologists within the oil industry have highlighted deep climate histories, such as the late Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum, which occurred 55 million years ago and disrupted Earth's climate for over 100,000 years—long before humans existed.

 

The implications of anthropogenic climate change extend far into the future, as emphasized by titles like David Archer's "The Long Thaw: How Humans Are Changing the Next 100,000 Years of Earth’s Climate." Fossil fuel emissions, with their long atmospheric lifetimes, could impact the climate for hundreds of millennia after the fuels themselves are depleted.

While policy specialists think in terms of years or decades, politicians often focus on electoral cycles. Bridging these disparate scales of time is crucial for developing effective climate policies.

 

Ultimately, understanding anthropogenic climate change requires grappling with timescales that transcend human measures. Despite the apparent irrelevance of million-year timescales to political decision-making, the lasting impact of climate change underscores the importance of considering these slow geological processes in our response to the crisis.

Conversely, climate scientists often employ a more vitalist rhetoric, likening the climate system to a living organism. This perspective highlights the interconnectedness and dynamism of Earth's systems, emphasizing the need for caution and respect in our interactions with the planet.

 

This tension between probabilistic thinking and the dynamic, complex nature of climate systems underscores the need for a more nuanced understanding of the climate crisis. Moving forward, it's essential to bridge these rifts and develop perspectives that account for both the global and planetary dimensions of anthropogenic climate change.

Hansen's use of the term "lethargic" to describe climate change highlights a vital aspect often overlooked in economic and political discourse. While the timescales of glacial-interglacial changes may span thousands of years, human-induced climate forcing operates on much shorter timescales, causing significant changes within decades. Human-induced climate change brings forth a plethora of justice-related issues, spanning across generations, nations, and socioeconomic divides. Peter Newell and Matthew Paterson shed light on the disparities inherent in the term "human-induced climate change," emphasizing that while all of humanity faces the threat, certain individuals and countries disproportionately contribute to the problem while others bear the brunt of its consequences. This underscores the political and moral dimensions of climate change, as articulated by Indian environmentalist Sunita Narain, who links climate change intricately with prevailing models of economic growth.

 

John Bellamy Foster, Brett Clark, and Richard York further assert that at the heart of the climate crisis lies a social rift rooted in class-based domination, inequality, and ceaseless acquisition. This sentiment echoes a report by the United Nations, which attributes the climate crisis to the uneven economic development patterns of the past centuries, primarily driven by the historically rich nations' disregard for environmental consequences. This perspective, championed by Indian environmental activists Anil Agarwal and Narain, underscores the concept of common but differentiated responsibilities, highlighting the need for developed countries to take greater accountability for their past actions.

 

However, it's crucial to recognize that the climate crisis isn't solely a product of historical injustices or economic disparities. The root cause lies in the sheer volume of greenhouse gas emissions, primarily emitted by a handful of nations and a fraction of the global population. A hypothetical scenario of more equitable wealth distribution wouldn't necessarily alleviate the climate crisis; in fact, it might exacerbate it due to increased consumption and carbon emissions. Thus, while historical inequalities undoubtedly play a role, reducing the climate crisis solely to a problem of capitalism overlooks the complex interplay of human history, earth-systems dynamics, and population factors.

 

Agarwal and Narain's advocacy for equitable distribution of natural carbon sinks highlights the thorny issue of population growth, often sidestepped in climate discussions. Population dynamics, while influenced by various factors including public health measures and economic development, cannot be solely attributed to capitalist exploitation. India's acknowledgment of its population challenges underscores the nuanced relationship between population growth, economic development, and environmental sustainability.

 

Population remains a critical factor shaping the trajectory of the climate crisis. Governments in countries like China and India continue to prioritize coal-fired power stations to uplift large populations out of poverty, citing coal's affordability as a key factor. Despite philosophical reflections on the balance between human "need" and "greed," coal remains the favored energy source due to its economic feasibility. This demand for coal fuels a global market, with countries like Australia seeking to capitalize on export opportunities, further perpetuating coal's dominance in the energy sector.

 

Moreover, population dynamics influence the climate crisis's impact on species extinction. Human expansion and consumption have long exerted pressure on biodiversity, evident in conflicts between humans and wildlife and the depletion of marine life. The exponential growth in human population, fueled in part by advancements in technology and agriculture, exacerbates these pressures. As global warming prompts species to migrate to more hospitable environments, they encounter barriers posed by human settlements, hindering their ability to adapt and survive.

 

The irony deepens as human proliferation not only impedes the migration of threatened species but also complicates the plight of human climate refugees. The rapid pace of climate change leaves little time for mass human migration, contrasting sharply with historical periods where populations could adapt over millennia. This highlights the dual nature of human history: the short-term impacts of industrialization and technological advancements intersect with the long-term evolutionary history of our species. Both the rich and the poor are intertwined in this narrative, with modern energy and technology underpinning the sustenance of billions of lives on Earth.

While per capita emissions serve as a crucial metric in climate discourse, they obscure the broader historical context wherein both affluent and impoverished populations participate. Population dynamics bridge these disparate histories, emphasizing the interconnectedness of human evolution, industrialization, and ecological impact. Understanding this complex interplay is vital for developing holistic solutions to address the climate crisis while acknowledging the shared responsibility borne by all segments of humanity.

The climate crisis serves as a nexus, or enjambment, between the typically separate realms of recorded human history and the deep history of Earth's systems. This convergence highlights the intricate connections between the planet's carbon cycle and the evolution of life. However, this newfound awareness does not dampen humanity's relentless pursuit of its ambitions and conflicts.

 

Steffen, Crutzen, and McNeill identify a period of "The Great Acceleration" from 1945 to 2015, characterized by exponential growth in various human activities such as population, GDP, urbanization, and resource consumption. This era coincided with widespread decolonization efforts and movements toward modernization and democratization worldwide. The surge in consumption during this period, including the adoption of consumer durables in Western households and the globalization of consumption patterns, symbolized a long-awaited form of social justice, particularly in the realm of consumption.

 

However, this pursuit of human progress has come at a cost: the near-total appropriation of the biosphere by humanity. Human activity now accounts for a significant portion of terrestrial vertebrate biomass, primarily through livestock farming and agricultural practices. This unprecedented alteration of natural ecosystems has profound implications for global biodiversity and ecological balance. Moreover, the exponential growth in human population exacerbates these challenges, further straining Earth's resources and threatening the survival of numerous species.

 

As humanity grapples with the consequences of its actions, questions of ethics and responsibility come to the fore. Broome acknowledges the ethical dilemma posed by climate change, particularly regarding the intrinsic value of nature. While he emphasizes the instrumental value of nature for human well-being, he stops short of delving into its inherent worth. Similarly, Archer underscores the humbling reality that humans are not biologically "special" and are merely a part of Earth's intricate web of life.

 

The concept of human exceptionalism, rooted in religious beliefs and social constructs, has long shaped human perceptions of the natural world. However, indigenous cosmologies, such as those of Australian Aboriginals, offer alternative perspectives that regard humans as integral components of the natural world rather than separate entities. Durkheim's analysis of totemism further elucidates this notion, highlighting the dual nature of humanity as both human and animal.

 

In confronting the climate crisis, humanity faces a profound reckoning with its place within the natural order. This challenges entrenched beliefs of human superiority and calls for a reevaluation of our relationship with the planet and its myriad life forms.

This point warrants a thorough examination, but for now, let's delve into a random and arbitrary example—arbitrary because I could have chosen examples from other religious traditions, including Hinduism. Consider the following insights from Fazlur Rahman, who elucidates the concept of qadar in the Qur'an, which means both "power and measuring out" and is closely associated with the word amr, meaning "command," to describe the nature of God's relationship with humanity as mediated through nature:

 

Rahman emphasizes that the all-powerful, purposeful, and merciful God measures out everything, endowing each element with its rightful range of potentialities, laws of behavior, and overall character. This divine measurement ensures the orderly functioning of nature while also highlighting the profound difference between the nature of God and the nature of humanity: the Creator's act of measuring implies an infinitude beyond which no measured creature can share. As Rahman asserts, "nature does not and cannot disobey God’s commands [amr] and cannot violate natural laws." This perspective clearly indicates that humans must not usurp the role of God; however, it does not preclude humans from discovering and applying these laws for their benefit. God's kindness is evident in the provision of resources for humanity.

 

Similarly, environmentalists often cite a verse from Genesis in which the Lord grants humans dominion over the earth and all its creatures, instructing them to be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and subdue it.

 

The discourse on climate change rekindles an age-old debate on anthropocentrism versus nonanthropocentrism in environmental ethics. Anthropocentrism posits that the value of nonhuman entities derives solely from their utility to humans, whereas nonanthropocentrism argues for valuing the nonhuman for its intrinsic worth. Feng Han suggests that human values inevitably stem from a human perspective, implying that nonanthropocentrism may be illusory. Ecologically minded philosophers have distinguished between weak and strong anthropocentrism, favoring the former, which involves rational reflection on the importance of the nonhuman for human flourishing.

 

James Lovelock's perspective on climate change diverges radically from this debate. He asserts in his book "The Vanishing Face of Gaia" that considering the health of the Earth without prioritizing human welfare is paramount. He emphasizes the Earth's health as primary, as human survival is entirely dependent on a healthy planet. Lovelock even entertains the possibility of a drastic reduction in human population, suggesting that our current lifestyle may only be sustainable for a fraction of the current population without harming life on the planet.

What does it mean for humans, inherently anthropocentric beings, to prioritize the Earth's well-being over human interests? How do we grapple with the notion that the Earth was not created exclusively for us? These questions will be explored further in the subsequent concluding section of this essay.

 

In his critique of my essay "The Climate of History: Four Theses," Slavoj Žižek raised important points regarding the relationship between anthropogenic climate change and the capitalist mode of production, which allows me to delve deeper into my final argument. Responding to my assertion that there are "natural parameters" to our existence as a species that are relatively independent of our economic systems, Žižek countered by suggesting that while the natural parameters of our environment are indeed independent of capitalism or socialism, the destabilization caused by global capitalism has profound implications. He argued that the fate of life on Earth is intertwined with the dynamics of the capitalist mode of production, signifying that the "part" (capitalism) now determines the fate of the "whole" (life on Earth).

 

Žižek's viewpoint posits capitalism as the primary driver of the ecological crisis, whereas my stance differs. I acknowledge that capitalism, reliant on cheap fossil-fuel energy, is a significant contributor to the climate crisis. However, I contend that human history is entangled with broader processes of Earth systems and evolutionary history, which transcend the scope of capitalism. These long-term processes, such as the Earth's million-year carbon cycle, operate on scales far beyond capitalism's temporal and spatial boundaries.

 

Recognizing these deep-time earth-system processes as coactors in the current crisis underscores the complexity of the climate issue. Unlike problems of wealth accumulation or income inequality, anthropogenic climate change could not have been predicted solely within the frameworks of political economy. Climate change is defined and constructed by climate scientists whose methodologies differ from those of political economists.

 

Furthermore, the emergence of climate science has blurred the distinction between the global and the planetary. While globalization narratives typically center on human activities, climate science transcends human-centric perspectives. Scientists like James Hansen, initially studying planetary warming on Venus, shifted their focus to Earth's climate due to rapid changes observed in the atmosphere. This shift reflects a broader trend in planetary science toward comparative planetary studies, exploring questions about the habitability of planets and the role of life in sustaining them.

 

The climate crisis prompts us to confront the planet's alterity, its belonging to another system beyond human control. As Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak aptly noted, "we inhabit" this planet, yet it exists within a species of alterity. This perspective challenges us to recognize our role as temporary guests rather than possessive hosts on Earth. Vron Ware, "Beyond the Pale:White Women, Racism and History" (Book Note)

 

 

Karen Warren's book, "Ecofeminist Philosophy: A Western Perspective on What It Is and Why It Matters," is a well-organized exploration of the ideology that perpetuates the domination of women and nature. It serves as an excellent introductory textbook for courses on environmental philosophy, feminist studies, or ecofeminism. The writing is clear and concise, using figures and phrases like "Ups vs. Downs," which, though straightforward, are well-suited for students. Due to its accessible style, the book is particularly useful as an introduction to ecofeminism. Additionally, the discussions on moral pluralism and the reconciliation of holism with individualism make the book appealing to a higher level of intellectual interest.

 

In "Chapter 1," Warren argues that environmental philosophy should align with feminism, supporting her claim with empirical evidence that instances of environmental destruction often coincide with hardships for women. The second chapter explores various ecofeminist perspectives on what Warren terms "women-other Other" connections, aiming to capture the main points of these alternative versions of ecofeminism.

 

The subsequent seven chapters present Warren's own viewpoint. "Chapter 3" contends that value dualisms have led to the oppression of women and nature, and resolving these oppressions requires re-conceiving the logic inherent in these dualisms. This is a reformulation of her earlier work. In "Chapter 4," Warren argues that ecofeminism is the most radical, even transformative, form of environmental philosophy. This assertion may be seen as contentious and possibly unsubstantiated by adherents to other environmental philosophies.

 

The following chapter advocates for moral consideration based on care, providing an excellent and timely discussion of how moral pluralism might function. The sixth chapter complements this by illustrating how ecofeminism and moral pluralism might apply in the context of vegetarianism.

Warren proceeds to discuss the connections between ecofeminism, ecological "hierarchy theory," and Aldo Leopold's ethics. This section challenges J. Baird Callicott's exaggerated claims about Leopold's holism and instead suggests a conciliatory argument that interrelates holism with individualism. This discussion contributes significantly to environmental philosophy, offering robust arguments on bridging the holism/individualism divide.

 

In "Chapter 8," Warren outlines how political theories of distributive justice have shortcomings and how ecofeminism can address those limitations while incorporating strengths from distributive justice theories. The final chapter advocates for linking feminist spirituality with ecofeminism. However, the book lacks a concluding section to tie the entire project together, even though the work itself maintains a level of cohesion. Warren effectively presents her position, making a clear case for ecofeminism and explaining its significance.

 

Two points of contention arise from Warren's discussion of domination and oppression. Firstly, her intermittent discussions of "other Others" – those who are neither women nor non-human others – may be seen as lacking sufficient argumentation. Warren asserts that feminism is inherently concerned with the oppression of other humans since women belong to all classes and races. Additionally, she criticizes deep ecology for not explicitly prioritizing women's oppression, raising questions about how ecofeminism's transformative status reassures individuals in lower classes or oppressed races.

 

The second concern is Warren's failure to consider the power of institutions in producing ideology. The Climate of History: Four Theses

The ongoing global crisis of climate change, also known as global warming, evokes diverse responses from individuals, groups, and governments. These responses range from denial and indifference to active engagement and activism. Alan Weisman's popular book, "The World without Us," proposes a thought experiment to help us grasp the urgency of our present situation. He asks us to imagine a world where human extinction has occurred, prompting us to consider the impact of our existence on the planet.

 

Weisman's experiment illustrates a challenge to our historical sensibility, disrupting the usual connection between past, present, and future. The discipline of history assumes a continuity in human experience across these temporal dimensions. However, the contemporary sense of the present, heightened by concerns about the future, creates a paradox. We need to project ourselves into a future "without us" to comprehend it, leading to a contradiction in our historical understanding.

 

This confusion arises from our current perception of the present, particularly in relation to anxieties about humanity's limits. Weisman's experiment reveals how this sense of the present can be destructive to our overall historical awareness. The essay suggests a need to reconsider our historical practices in light of the challenges posed by climate change.

 

The climate change debate offers valuable insights for those engaged in discussions about history. The growing recognition that environmental risks result from the accumulation of greenhouse gases challenges traditional ideas about human history. Scientific findings on climate change not only question established notions of humanity but also challenge analytical strategies used by historians, especially in response to postcolonial and postimperial contexts.

 

In the concluding part of the essay, the author plans to revisit Weisman's experiment, emphasizing its relevance to contemporary historical discussions. Overall, the scientific insights into climate change force a reevaluation of historical concepts, including those related to the birth of the modern world, and prompt a critical reflection on postcolonial and postimperial historical approaches.

 

In the following discussion, I present insights on the current crisis from a historian's perspective. Before delving into the topic, it's important to acknowledge my connection to the literature on climate change. As a practicing historian deeply interested in the nature of history as a form of knowledge, my understanding of global warming is largely derived from scientific findings shared with the general public.

 

Scientific investigations into global warming trace back to the 1890s, notably with the work of Swedish scientist Svante Arrhenius. However, public discussions on global warming gained prominence in the late 1980s and early 1990s, coinciding with the discourse on globalization among social scientists and humanists. Despite this temporal parallel, these discussions developed independently. While globalization quickly captured the attention of humanists and social scientists, global warming did not become a significant public concern until the 2000s.

 

The delayed recognition can be attributed to various factors, including government reluctance influenced by special interests and political concerns. Even as early as 1988, warnings from figures like James Hansen, the director of NASA's Goddard Institute of Space Studies, went unheeded. It wasn't until the 2000s, with increasingly dire predictions and visible signs of the crisis, that global warming gained political and economic attention. Events such as droughts in Australia, frequent cyclones and wildfires, crop failures worldwide, melting glaciers, polar ice cap deterioration, rising sea acidity, and damage to the food chain became impossible to ignore. Concerns also grew about the rapid destruction of other species and the global impact of a human population expected to exceed nine billion by 2050.

In recent years, as the crisis intensified, I realized that my extensive readings in theories of globalization, Marxist capital analysis, subaltern studies, and postcolonial criticism did not adequately prepare me to comprehend this global situation. Despite their usefulness in studying globalization, these theories fell short in helping me make sense of the planetary challenges humanity faces today.

 

The shift in the mood of globalization analysis is evident when comparing Giovanni Arrighi's earlier work, "The Long Twentieth Century" (1994), with his later "Adam Smith in Beijing" (2007). The former, a meditation on the internal chaos of capitalist economies, concludes with thoughts on capitalism's role in the world's escalating violence. In contrast, the latter emphasizes ecological limits to capitalism, reflecting Arrighi's evolving concern over thirteen years. This evolution prompts the question of how to integrate our understanding of globalization and global warming, considering their interconnected processes.

 

Despite not being a scientist, I make a fundamental assumption about climate change science—I trust that the broad outlines of the science are accurate. I rely on the views expressed in authoritative reports like the 2007 Fourth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the Stern Review, and recent publications by scientists and scholars explaining global warming. Unless there is a significant shift in scientific consensus, I accept the anthropogenic theories of climate change as largely truthful.

 

My position is supported by observations such as those presented by Naomi Oreskes, a historian of science at the University of California, San Diego. She examined 928 papers on global warming published in specialized peer-reviewed scientific journals between 1993 and 2003 and found that none disputed the consensus among scientists regarding human-induced climate change. While there may be disagreements about the extent and direction of change, virtually all professional climate scientists agree on the reality of human-induced climate change, with ongoing debates on the specifics.

 

In my readings, I haven't found any compelling reasons to remain skeptical about global warming. The scientific consensus, particularly regarding the human influence on the current climate crisis, forms the basis of my discussion here.

 

To provide clarity and focus, I present my ideas in the form of four theses. The subsequent three theses stem from the first one. I start with the proposition that explanations attributing climate change to human activities challenge and essentially dissolve the traditional distinction between natural history and human history. This leads to a broader question: How does the climate change crisis impact our understanding of universal human experiences while simultaneously challenging our ability to comprehend it historically?

Thesis 1: Anthropogenic Explanations of Climate Change Spell the Collapse of the Age-old Humanist Distinction between Natural History and Human History

 

Philosophers and historians have often consciously separated human history, or the narrative of human affairs, from natural history. This tendency, as described by R. G. Collingwood, has deep historical roots. One starting point is the Viconian-Hobbesian idea suggesting that humans could have proper knowledge only of civil and political institutions because they create them, while nature remains God's work and fundamentally inscrutable to humanity. This understanding contributed to Marx's famous statement that "men make their own history, but they do not make it just as they please."

 

Vico's ideas, though not always as distinctly separating natural and human sciences as later readings suggested, influenced the nineteenth and twentieth-century historian's common sense. Collingwood, influenced by Croce, played a significant role in perpetuating this distinction, evident in his impact on E. H. Carr's influential work "What Is History?" Collingwood's arguments developed along Viconian lines, emphasizing that nature lacks an "inside," and events in nature are mere happenings, not the acts of intentional agents. As Collingwood put it, "all history properly so called is the history of human affairs."

 

Collingwood's perspective suggested that historians should focus on actions with human thought behind them, making a distinction between historical and non-historical human actions. Activities determined by basic human instincts were considered non-historical, while those influenced by thought, convention, and morality were deemed historical. Collingwood argued that the historian should be concerned with social customs created by human thought, framing natural instincts in ways approved by convention and morality. This separation led Collingwood to conclude that studying the history of the social construction of the body was relevant, but not the history of the body itself. By delineating the human into the natural and the social or cultural, Collingwood saw no necessity to reconcile the two aspects.

 

In discussing Croce's 1893 essay "History Subsumed under the Concept of Art," Collingwood pointed out that Croce, by rejecting the German idea that history was a science, distanced himself from naturalism. Croce embraced the idea that history was fundamentally different from nature. Drawing on the works of Ernst Mach and Henri Poincaré, Croce argued that the concepts of natural sciences are human constructs created for human purposes. According to Croce, when we observe nature, we find reflections of ourselves, and our understanding of the natural world is shaped by our human perspective.

 

Croce's idealism suggested that material objects, like rocks, only exist within human thought. They neither exist nor do not exist independently of human concerns and language. Both Croce and Collingwood integrated human history and nature into purposive human action, considering what exists beyond this human framework as not having meaningful existence.

In the twentieth century, other sociological or materialist arguments existed alongside the Viconian one, justifying the separation of human and natural history. An example is Stalin's publication in 1938, "Dialectical and Historical Materialism," where he asserted that geographical environment influences societal development but is not the determining factor. Stalin argued that changes in human society occur at a much faster rate than changes in the geographical environment.

This separation of human and natural history persisted, with historians assuming that man's relationship to his environment changed so slowly that it was almost timeless. Even Fernand Braudel, in his rebellion against this stance, acknowledged that the environment was often treated as a passive backdrop to historical narratives. While Braudel introduced a more dynamic role for the environment, the underlying assumption was similar to Stalin's—that the history of man's relationship to the environment progressed at a slow and almost timeless pace.

 

In today's understanding of climate change, climatologists emphasize the idea of tipping points, where the climate and overall environment can rapidly transform, posing a significant threat to human beings. This concept challenges the earlier assumption that the history of human-environment relationships unfolds at a slow and timeless pace.

 

While Braudel began to challenge the binary division of natural and human history, the rise of environmental history in the late twentieth century widened this breach. Environmental historians, to some extent, moved towards creating natural histories of humans. However, a crucial distinction lies in the understanding of human beings in these histories compared to the agency proposed by scientists studying climate change.

 

Environmental history, when not entirely cultural, social, or economic, viewed humans primarily as biological agents. Scholars like Alfred Crosby argued that humans are biological entities before being categorized as members of specific cultures or economic systems. Recent works, such as Daniel Lord Smail's "On Deep History and the Brain," explore connections between evolutionary and neurosciences with human histories. Smail's focus is on the history of human biology, not on recent ideas about humans acquiring geological agency.

 

The current discourse on climate change introduces a novel perspective. Climate scientists challenge the long-standing distinction between natural and human histories by asserting that humans have evolved into geological agents. This means that humans, once considered solely biological agents, now wield a geological force capable of altering fundamental Earth processes.

 

Naomi Oreskes emphasizes that denying global warming is, in essence, denying that humans have become geological agents, influencing the basic physical processes of the Earth. Unlike the perspective of environmental history, which often envisioned humans as prisoners of climate, the current discourse sees humans as the makers of the planet's conditions.

 

Calling humans geological agents implies a significant scaling up of our understanding of humanity. While humans have always been biological agents, the attribution of geological agency comes into play only historically and collectively. This occurs when human population numbers and technologies reach a scale large enough to impact the planet on a geological scale. This transformation into geological agents is a recent development, intensifying since the Industrial Revolution and particularly in the second half of the twentieth century.

 

This shift challenges a fundamental assumption in Western political thought—the idea that humans interact with nature. Instead, the claim now is that humans are forces of nature in a geological sense, marking a departure from traditional Western perspectives on the relationship between human and natural histories.

Thesis 2: The Idea of the Anthropocene, the New Geological Epoch When Humans Exist as a Geological Force, Severely Qualifies Humanist Histories of Modernity/Globalization

 

One of the fundamental questions underlying human histories from 1750 to the present era of globalization is how to reconcile human cultural and historical diversity with human freedom. Gadamer highlighted that diversity itself was considered a symbol of freedom in the historian's imagination of the historical process. Freedom, over this period, has encompassed various meanings, ranging from notions of human and citizens' rights to those of decolonization and self-rule.

 

Examining the works of philosophers like Kant, Hegel, Marx, and the historical events such as the struggle against slavery, revolutions, and civil rights movements, freedom emerges as a central theme in written accounts of human history spanning the past 250 years. However, the meaning of freedom has varied among different thinkers and contexts.

 

What has been notably absent in discussions of freedom since the Enlightenment is an awareness of the geological agency that humans have been acquiring simultaneously with and through processes linked to their pursuit of freedom. Philosophers focused on human escape from injustice, oppression, inequality, or uniformity imposed by other humans or human-made systems, while geological time and the chronology of human histories remained unrelated.

 

The period from 1750 to the present is marked by a significant shift from renewable fuels to the widespread use of fossil fuels like coal, oil, and gas. The foundations of modern freedoms are closely tied to the extensive use of fossil fuels, making most of our freedoms energy-intensive.

 

The same historical period, associated with the development of civilization's institutions, also coincides with the Holocene, the geological epoch in which we currently reside. However, the concept of the Anthropocene has been proposed by scientists, suggesting a new geological era where humans act as the primary determinant of the planet's environment. This proposal, introduced by chemist Paul J. Crutzen and marine science specialist Eugene F. Stoermer in 2000, suggests that human impacts on the Earth's atmosphere justify recognizing a distinct epoch named the Anthropocene. Crutzen further explained in 2002 that the Anthropocene could be considered to have started in the late 18th century, coinciding with the Industrial Revolution and the significant increase in carbon dioxide and methane concentrations due to human activities. This period also aligns with James Watt's design of the steam engine in 1784.

 

Certainly, Crutzen stating the Anthropocene's existence doesn't officially designate it as an accepted geological period, as periodization in geology is a complex and debated process. The term Holocene, denoting the post-glacial epoch of the past ten to twelve thousand years, faced similar challenges before its acceptance in 1885 after fifty years of debate.

 

Concerning the Anthropocene, scientists, including the Geological Society of London's Stratigraphy Commission, have accepted Crutzen's definition and dating, suggesting it as a new geological epoch for formal consideration. This acceptance is gradually extending to social scientists.

 

The period from 1750 to the present prompts questions: Is it an era of freedom or the Anthropocene? Does the Anthropocene critique narratives of freedom? Is human geological agency the cost of pursuing freedom? In some ways, yes, as human decisions have inadvertently led to becoming geological agents. However, the relationship between Enlightenment ideals of freedom and the merging of human and geological timelines is complex.

 

While the Anthropocene results from human choices, the way forward requires reason and global, collective efforts for sustainability, according to Crutzen and Stoermer. This underscores the need for Enlightenment values in the Anthropocene era. However, optimism about the role of reason is qualified by the predominant shape freedom takes in societies: politics. Politics, especially in a world marked by mass populations and inequalities, cannot rely on reason alone. Urban population growth, increasing food and energy crises, and uncertain global conditions pose challenges with unclear solutions.

 

 

It's not surprising that the climate change crisis brings about anxieties, particularly about future scenarios that are challenging to envision. Scientists expressing hope in reason guiding us out of the current predicament reflects a tension Bruno Latour discusses in his "Politics of Nature" between the idealized myth of Science and the practical politics within scientific endeavors. Edward O. Wilson, lacking a political perspective, can only express his practical optimism with a mix of hope and anxiety, stating, "Perhaps we will act in time."

 

However, the scientific understanding of global warming inherently generates political imperatives. Tim Flannery's book highlights the ominous possibility of an "Orwellian nightmare" in a section titled "2084: The Carbon Dictatorship." Mark Maslin, in concluding his book, presents a pessimistic view, suggesting that relying solely on global politics may not effectively address global warming. He warns against potentially problematic technofixes and notes the challenge of long-term planning in societies driven by short-term political considerations. Maslin emphasizes the need to prepare for the worst and adapt. These perspectives, along with observations from Mike Davis about an impending "planet of slums," cast a shadow over the concept of human freedom in the Anthropocene era.

Thesis 3: The Geological Hypothesis Regarding the Anthropocene Requires Us to Put Global Histories of Capital in Conversation with the Species History of Humans

 

Analytic frameworks that criticize capitalist globalization haven't become obsolete in the era of climate change. On the contrary, climate change might intensify global inequalities if the interests of the poor are ignored. While critiques of capitalism remain relevant, they aren't enough to comprehend human history considering the climate crisis and the emergence of the Anthropocene. The challenge is to intertwine the geological now of the Anthropocene with human history.

 

Scholars distinguish between recorded history (the last ten thousand years, especially the past four thousand with written records) and deep history, encompassing genetic and cultural changes over hundreds of thousands of years. Understanding the crisis of climate change necessitates recognizing the consequences of global warming in the context of human history as part of the broader history of life on Earth.

 

Terms like "species" used by scholars such as Wilson and Crutzen in discussing human life don't typically appear in standard histories or analyses of globalization. Species thinking is connected to deep history and is crucial for visualizing human well-being in the context of climate change. To address the crisis effectively, it's essential to reconcile different intellectual perspectives, including planetary and global considerations, deep and recorded histories, and species thinking with critiques of capitalism.

 

This perspective challenges the prevailing view in historians' thinking on globalization and world history, which emphasizes multiple modernities and a fragmented humanity. Scientists advocating the Anthropocene argue that humans, as a specific species, have become a geological force. This requires creating a dialogue between these contrasting positions.

 

It's understandable that historians might be concerned about the term "species" sounding biological, as it raises worries about a more deterministic worldview, potential essentialism, and the historical misuse of biology. However, scholars like Smail argue against essentialism, emphasizing that species, according to Darwin, are not fixed entities with inherent essences.

 

Different academic disciplines position their practitioners differently in terms of how they perceive the human being. While medicine or biology might reduce humans to specific understandings, humanist historians may overlook that their historical protagonists—individuals—are also reductions. The crisis of climate change challenges scholars to transcend disciplinary biases, emphasizing the multi-dimensional nature of the crisis.

 

Observing the role of the "species" category among scholars, including economists, reveals its significance in understanding the climate crisis. Economists like Jeffrey Sachs use the idea of species as central to their arguments, acknowledging the role of the Anthropocene. The concept of species plays a pivotal role, analogous to the Marxist notion of the multitude or masses, in envisioning a collective self-recognition and unity among humans. For Edward Wilson, recognizing ourselves as a species becomes crucial for achieving self-understanding and addressing the challenges posed by climate change.

Critics on the Left might raise doubts about using the idea of "species" in the context of climate change, arguing that anthropogenic factors contributing to global warming are tied to the broader story of capitalism's development in the West and its imperial domination globally. The question is, why include all of humanity using terms like species or mankind when the blame for the crisis lies primarily with the rich nations and classes?

 

While some scientists suggest dating the Anthropocene from the time of agriculture, it's crucial to understand that falling into the Anthropocene was neither ancient nor inevitable. The transition from wood to coal and then to petroleum and gas had historical contingency, demonstrated by scholars like Kenneth Pomeranz. Historical accidents and coincidences played a role in the development of capitalist societies, and human population growth since World War II has been substantial.

 

If industrial civilization led us into this crisis, why use the category of species, which belongs to a much longer history? The narrative of capitalism, with its critique, might seem sufficient as a framework for understanding climate change. However, the crisis has exposed conditions for human life that go beyond the logics of capitalist, nationalist, or socialist identities. These conditions connect to the history of life on Earth, interrelations between different life forms, and the potential dangers of mass extinction. Without considering this broader history of life, the crisis of climate change lacks human "meaning" because it is not a crisis for the inorganic planet.

 

In simpler terms, the industrial way of life has led us into a situation where we must recognize certain boundary conditions essential for the existence of institutions central to our idea of modernity. Take the agricultural revolution as an example. It was not just a result of human inventiveness but was made possible by changes in the atmosphere, climate stability, and planet warming. Parameters like the Earth's temperature zone, crucial for human existence, are independent of specific socioeconomic or technological choices. While celebrating rights and freedoms, we cannot afford to destabilize these parametric conditions that have allowed humans to become the dominant species on Earth, even if unintended consequences now make us geological agents disturbing these essential conditions for our own existence.

 

This doesn't negate the historical responsibility of wealthier Western nations in emitting greenhouse gases. Mentioning "species thinking" doesn't oppose the politics of "common but differentiated responsibility" pursued by developing countries like China and India when it comes to reducing emissions. Whether blame is placed retrospectively on the West for past emissions or prospectively on emerging economies like China is tied to the histories of capitalism and modernization. However, the discovery that humans have become a geological agent points to a shared catastrophe affecting all.

 

Crutzen and Stoermer describe this catastrophe caused by human expansion: population growth, depletion of fossil fuels, release of pollutants, and alteration of ecosystems. Understanding this catastrophe requires interdisciplinary conversations and an exploration of both recorded and deep histories, similar to explaining the agricultural revolution through geology, archaeology, and history.

 

While scientists like Wilson and Crutzen may be politically naive, they articulate Enlightenment ideals, emphasizing reason as a guide for collective choices. Although not explicitly anti-capitalist, they acknowledge the need for a wiser use of resources. Their focus on knowledge of humans as a species, interdependent with other species in the history of life, highlights actions detrimental to our existence, regardless of political choices. Global warming cannot be comprehended without considering their propositions.

 

Simultaneously, the story of capital and the contingent history leading to the Anthropocene cannot be dismissed by embracing the idea of species. Combining these perspectives challenges the traditional notion of historical understanding. Addressing the crisis of climate change necessitates thinking across both capital and species history, bridging the seemingly incompatible chronologies. This amalgamation, however, fundamentally stretches the conventional concept of historical understanding.

 

Thesis 4: The Cross-Hatching of Species History and the History of Capital Is a Process of Probing the Limits of Historical Understanding

 

Understanding history, as per the Diltheyan tradition, involves critical thinking that draws on generic ideas about human experience. Dilthey viewed the individual's private experience as the starting point for a broader understanding, filling it with the richness of historical experiences through a living transposition. Historical consciousness, in this view, is a form of self-knowledge gained through critical reflections on personal and others' historical experiences.

 

Humanist histories of capitalism rely on the assumption that there is something called the experience of capitalism. For example, E. P. Thompson's exploration of working-class experience of capitalist labor presupposes this assumption. Humanist histories create meaning by appealing to our ability not just to reconstruct but, as Collingwood suggested, to reenact past experiences in our minds.

 

However, when Wilson suggests achieving self-understanding as a species for our collective future, it doesn't align with the historical understanding that connects past and future experiences through the assumption of continuity in human experience. The statement raises questions about who the "we" is, as humans never directly experience themselves as a species. While we can intellectually comprehend the concept of the human species, we don't have a phenomenology of being a species. The discussion about the climate change crisis can elicit emotions and knowledge about collective human pasts and futures, but it operates at the limits of historical understanding. Specific effects of the crisis are experienced, but not the phenomenon as a whole.

 

This situation prompts a question: should we assert, as Geyer and Bright suggest, that "humanity no longer comes into being through 'thought'" or agree with Foucault's notion that "the human being no longer has any history"? Geyer and Bright, adopting a Foucaultian perspective, argue that world history's task is to reveal the structures of power, supported by information, that compress humanity into a singular humankind.

The critique that views humanity as an effect of power has been valuable for postcolonial scholarship and its hermeneutics of suspicion, particularly in analyzing national and global structures of domination. However, this perspective seems insufficient when addressing the global warming crisis.

 

Firstly, vague images of humanity and alternative conceptions persist in our understanding of the current crisis. This is evident in titles like Weisman's "The World Without Us" and his attempt to depict the experience of New York after human absence.

 

Secondly, the distinction between human and natural history has eroded. While we may not perceive ourselves as geological agents, it appears we have become one at the species level. Understanding this crisis that affects us all requires knowledge that surpasses historical understanding. While climate change, influenced by global capital, may intensify the inequalities inherent in capitalist rule, reducing the entire crisis to a capitalist narrative is insufficient.

 

Unlike in capitalist crises, there are no guaranteed escape routes for the rich and privileged in the face of climate change (as seen in events like droughts in Australia and fires in affluent Californian neighborhoods). The anxiety induced by global warming is comparable to the fear of a global nuclear war, but with a crucial difference. Nuclear war would have been a deliberate decision by those in power, whereas climate change is an unintended consequence of human actions. Scientific analysis reveals the effects of our actions as a species.

 

The concept of "species" might serve as a placeholder for an emerging, new universal history of humans prompted by the imminent danger of climate change. However, this universal is distinct – it doesn't arise dialectically from historical movements or as a product of the crisis of capital. Geyer and Bright rightly reject these notions of the universal. Climate change raises questions about a collective human identity, an "us," pointing to a universal that eludes our ability to experience the world directly. It resembles a universal born from a shared awareness of catastrophe – a "negative universal history." The Blue Humanities

 

Oceanography, as a scientific field, is still in its early stages of development. Since the nineteenth century, fiction has envisioned underwater worlds that explorers couldn't reach. Rachel Carson, a key figure in marine sciences, drew inspiration from arts and literature. In 1951, she suggested that humans would mentally and imaginatively return to the sea, from which they originated eons ago. This cultural interest in the sea began in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, leading to a significant body of literature, art, and music that could be explored in the emerging field termed "blue humanities."

 

Maritime history, once focused on surface activities, now delves into life within the ocean itself, blending with marine biology and natural history. The scope of history has expanded beyond water's edge, with the Mediterranean and Atlantic Seas being central to ancient and early modern scholarship. Recently, the Pacific has gained prominence in contemporary studies. While sea stories, chanties, and marine art are not new, academic scrutiny has only recently been applied. The seascape, once a minor genre, gained importance in the nineteenth century, particularly with artists like J. M. W. Turner and Winslow Homer who depicted light and movement on canvas, termed "pure seascape" by some critics.

 

The modern novel had its beginnings at sea with "Robinson Crusoe," evolved metaphysically with "Moby-Dick," and found expression in watery science fiction by authors like Jules Verne. Herman Melville's insight that "meditation and water are wedded forever" anticipated Rachel Carson's similar idea in "The Sea Around Us" (1951) by almost a century. In the emerging field of "ecoliterature," we are discovering the scientific side of writers like John Steinbeck, seen in his collaboration with naturalist Ed Ricketts in "The Log from the Sea of Cortez," one of the early examples of this genre.

 

The concept of "blue humanities" reflects a belated acknowledgment of the deep connection between modern Western culture and the sea. Before the nineteenth century, attitudes toward the oceans were more practical than aesthetic. The sea was often depicted as dangerous, repellant, and unfit for artistic representation. The focus was on the utilitarian aspects, viewing the sea as a means to reach distant lands. The oceans themselves, referred to as "The Deep," were considered unfathomable and mysterious, a dark zone concealing its secrets.

 

Until the nineteenth century, our understanding of the sea was superficial, merely navigating its surface. Early sea fiction and art mainly focused on ships and seafaring skills, neglecting the oceans themselves. The second discovery of the sea, starting in the late eighteenth century, expanded our knowledge, recognizing the sea as a living, three-dimensional entity with its history, geography, and life. Modern times achieved what no other era attempted—the exploration of the temporal and spatial depth of the sea. Darwinian science acknowledged the sea as the origin of all life on Earth, challenging biblical chronology. Archaeology traced the origins of Homo sapiens back to the African shore.

 

Ironically, when nations shifted focus away from the sea as a workplace, writers and painters turned their attention to the sea itself. It became a place of spiritual and physical recreation, acquiring new cultural significance and aesthetic power. The ocean transformed into a source of images and metaphors, influencing Western culture, with the shipwreck being a notable example.

As science delved into the oceans, new myths emerged, with the concept of Atlantis, a submerged continent, resurfacing in a modern world concerned about its survival. The sea gained prominence in Western collective consciousness and became a symbol with diverse meanings. Jonathan Raban describes it as the most versatile symbol, constantly reshaping itself for each writer and generation. It transformed into a symbol of eternity, offering comfort to those who, losing faith in divine afterlife, saw in its timeless flows evidence of nature's immortality and a secular promise of everlasting life. For Joseph Conrad, who disapproved of industrial changes to the land, the sea was the only viable alternative.

 

The sea, despite reduced direct interaction, became a mirror for those on land to contemplate their condition. Symbolic and metaphorical representations of the sea increased even as people's actual involvement diminished. Charles Dickens deemed the sea beneficial for both body and mind. In America, a coastal, sea-conscious culture with romantic literary traditions developed.

 

On a personal level, the sea served as a metaphor for life. In an era of constant change, it represented the flow of life in ways the land could not. The seaside, according to J. G. Francis, provided an ideal setting for contemplation. The flood tide symbolized youth, the ebb tide old age, and the horizon spoke of a steadfast future and immutable
